Full bio: A graduate of Bard College, Jubilith Moore is a performer, director, teaching artist and producer for the theatre who has devoted her professional life to exploring the ongoing life of traditional Japanese and contemporary American theatre. She studied noh with Richard Emmert, Akira Matsui and Kinue Oshima, kyogen with Yukio Ishida and Yuriko Doi and is a Founding Company Member of Theatre Nohgaku currently sitting on the Steering Committee. She was Artistic Director of Theatre of Yugen from 2001 to 2014, a Company Member from 1993 – 2014 and a Founding Company Member of the Erin Merritt’s all-female Shakespeare company Woman’s Will. In addition to performing, directing and expanding Theatre of Yugen’s kyogen in English repertoire, Jubilith performed in these world premier productions: THE CLAY PLAY; NORTON, I, (BEING THE MOST NOBLE TALE OF THE FALL AND RISE OF JOSHUA ABRAHAM NORTON, THE FIRST EMPEROR OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND PROTECTOR OF ALL MEXICO); FRANKENSTEIN; MOON OF THE SCARLET PLUMS (Japan and US). She adapted and directed THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA based on Hemingway’s novel and was a core performer in Erik Ehn’s all-day theatre event THE CYCLE PLAYS (07/07/07). She adapted and directed a full-length kyogen style CANDIDE OR OPTIMISM (world premier); directed herself as the central figure in Erik Ehn’s CORDELIA, which was later invited to be a part of his SOULOGRAPHIE: OUR GENOCIDES project at New York’s historic La MaMa E.T.C. Jubilith directed and performed in Greg Giovanni’s A MINOR CYCLE- FIVE LITTLE PLAYS IN ONE STARRY NIGHT. She directed Kevin Simmonds and Judy Halebsky’s EMMETT TILL, A RIVER; Chiori Miyagawa’s THIS LINGERING LIFE, in which she also performed; Other noteworthy theatrical accomplishments include directing Carrie Preston’s ZAHDI DATES AND POPPIES (world premier), and Judy Halebsky’s THE WEAVER AND THE DRESS; performing the Waki role in Greg Giovanni’s, PINE BARRENS (world premier), Janette Cheong’s PAGODA (world premier) on the critically acclaimed European and Asian tours; ATSUMORI (in Japanese) and in Deborah Brevoort’s BLUE MOON OVER MEMPHIS, in which she has also portrayed the Shite role of Elvis. She has been the chorus leader for David Crandall’s CRAZY JANE; the Old Man in AT THE HAWK’S WELL and played the kotsuzumi for the full noh HAGOROMO (in Japanese). Jubilith led Theatre of Yugen’s public and internal training from 2003 – 2014. She is often invited to teach Nohgaku workshops both in the States and abroad to students of all ages. She has been a Lecturer at San Francisco State University and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Willamette University. Jubilith assisted Richard Emmert in his American based Noh Training Project from 2003 – 2014, and was an Artist-in-Residence at San Francisco’s Ruth Asawa School of the Arts from 1998 - 2018. In 1991 Jubilith was honored with The Ana Itelman Prize and The Carter Tobin Prize for performance. Her production of PURGATORY won the award for Best Ensemble at the 2001 LUNAEA Festival. In addition to being a Japan Foundation Fellow, Jubilith was the fortunate recipient of Theatre Bay Area’s CA$H Fund (2010) as well as its CA$H Creates Award (2017). She was among the first recipients of Theatre Communications Group’s new Leadership U[niversity] program and honored by their Future Collaborations Program. In 2016 she was honored to receive the Investing in Artists grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation. She sat on the Board of Directors for Theatre of Yugen and the Network of Ensemble Theatres (NET).
